   Theresa Zielinski

Jim Beard took the minutes at the two meetings. A summary organized
under specific subject headings follows. Some additional information
not
mentioned in the meetings has been included in this summary.

Please send comments or corrections via CCCENET or to me privately.

I. SYMPOSIA AT NATIONAL AND REGIONAL MEETINGS

        Catherine H. Middlecamp (chmiddle@facstaff.wisc.edu) and
Harry Pence (pencehe@oneonta.edu) are CCCE members and on the
Division of Chemical Education's Program Committee. Cathy was at
the BCCE and is Division Program Co-Chair for the August 2002
   National Meeting in Boston.

It was suggested at the open meeting that a workshop on
assessment be organized. At the closed meeting it was suggested by
Steven Lower that this topic might better lend itself to a symposium
rather than a workshop. Such a symposium is being planned for the
International Chemical Congress of Pacific Basin Societies in Hawaii
in December 2000. A symposium on this topic may be planned for the
Boston meeting. There is student assessment,
software assessment and technology assessment. It is not quite clear
which of these kinds of assessment will be addressed.

Anyone having suggestions for symposia or wishing to organize a
symposium may contact either Cathy or Harry.

II. ON-LINE COMPUTER CONFERENCES

The next conference is scheduled for September 2000.
Conferences have been proposed until Fall 2002 and beyond.
   Consult the CONFCHEM website (http://www.ched-ccce.org/confchem/)
   for further details.

Brian Tissue (tissue@vt.edu) is handling the CONFCHEM website
   (http://www.ched-ccce.org/confchem/) and I (rosen1@clarkson.edu) am
handling the CONFCHEM Majordomo discussion list.

If you have suggestions about scheduled sessions, please contact
the session organizer or send a message to CCCENET@CLARKSON.EDU.
Also, suggestions may be sent to Brian or me.

III. ON-LINE INTERCOLLEGIATE COURSES

The fourth intercollegiate course was held during the spring
2000 semester. See the CCCE website (http://www.ched-ccce.org/) for
   information about previous courses.

Jim Beard (beard@catawba.edu) has agreed to chair a CCCE
sub-committee to review what has been done, make suggestions and
assist with the organization of future courses.

Michael J. Sanger suggested an on-line course on teaching methods
which might be organized by someone at his school.

IV. COMPUTERS IN CHEMICAL EDUCATION NEWSLETTER

The CCE Newsletter will only be available on-line beginning with
the Fall 2000 issue. See the Spring 2000 Newsletter or the
   Newsletter website (http://www.ched-ccce.org/newsletter.html)
   for further details.

Brian Pankuch (pankuch@hawk.ucc.edu) needs articles for the fall
and future Newsletters. PLEASE submit articles, software or book
reviews and website information to Brian.

V. NATIONAL COMPUTER WORKSHOPS

No National Computer Workshops were held at the University of
Michigan BCCE. At the BCCE I spoke with Sara Selfe, Program Chair of
the 2002 BCCE which is to be held at Western Washington University.
If satisfactory arrangements can be made, we plan to hold CCCE
National Workshops at the 2002 BCCE. Charles Abrams has volunteered
to co-chair the 2002 workshops with me and to organize future
National Workshops. For the 2002 Workshops, I am handling
negotiations with Western Washington University and Charles will be
   interacting with workshop organizers.

We discussed future workshops in the open and closed sessions
   at the BCCE.
Those workshops being planned for the 2000 BCCE
   (Titles and descriptions are tentative)

   A. Instructional Software for General (?) Chemistry
          James H. Reeves (reeves@uncwil.edu)
          Steven K. Lower (lower@sfu.ca)
Jimmy Reeves mentioned that chemistry software suppliers might be
asked to make their software available for the workshop and
perhaps make presentations. The software might be available at a
poster-like session during the BCCE meeting.

      B. Using The World Wide Web in Chemistry Courses
          Brian Tissue (tissue@vt.edu)
What's available and how to develop web materials.

      C. Using and Developing Multimedia Materials for Chemistry
         Instruction
          Charles Abrams (abrams@beloit.edu)
          Marco Molinaro (molinaro@scienceview.lhs.berkeley.edu)

      D. Using Molecular Modeling Software (?)
          ?

What is available for pc and mainframe computers.
Learning to use the software and what's available on the
          www for instruction

          Some suggested course instructors were
Alan and Gwen Shusterman or Jim Snyder or Paul M. Lahti.
          Charles Abrams has additional suggestions

      E. Physical Chemistry On-Line (PCOL)
          Theresa Zielinski (tzielins@monmouth.edu)
George Long (grlong@grove.iup.edu) et al (?)
NSF funds may subsidize participants in this workshop

      F. (tentative) On-Line Chemistry Course Development Workshop
          Jim Beard et al
This workshop would include instructors interested in
developing new and different on-line courses. The workshop
would be used to familiarize participants with previously
offered courses and would discuss new and old strategies
          which might be used.

      G. (tentative) Excel, and/or Mathcad and/or Maple in Advanced
Chemistry
Suggested by someone at the open meeting
Flick Coleman at Wellesley College was suggested as a possible
          workshop instructor.
Workshop E may contain Mathcad materials (?)

At the open meeting Jennifer Muzyka (muzyka@centre.edu) suggested a
Chime Workshop. Liz Dorland (liz.dorland@mcmail.maricopa.edu) indicated
she would be willing to help with this. Someone suggested Chime might
be
included as part of the multimedia workshop.

At the closed meeting Michael Sanger indicated he would like to offer a
workshop on "Instructional Technology for Pre-College Teachers" at the
2004 BCCE in Iowa.

VI. 2002 BCCE

In addition to the National Workshops to be held just before the
BCCE, I talked to Sara Selfe about organizing a CCCE Symposium
entitled "Computers in Chemical Education - Selected Topics". I am
suggesting that each member of the CCCE who will be at the meeting
present a paper in this symposium. Only CCCE members would be
   presenters at this symposium.

VII. The CCCE and WebCT

Elaine Leary (WebCT), Joel Caughran and Charles Atwood (WebCT
and University of Georgia) attended the open meeting and met with
some of us after the meeting. They offered to:

   A. publicize our activities on the WebCT website
       (http://www.webct.com)
   B. make their server available at no charge for on-line courses,
       conferences and perhaps host CCCENET

This proposal was discussed briefly at the closed meeting.
Several CCCE members are using WebCT software. Some reluctance was
expressed in linking our CCCE activities with ONE of several
competing software companies. However, no one objected to having
WebCT publicize our activities and providing links to the CCCE
   website.

WebCT offered to provide an on-line workshop in October to
familiarize CCCE members with their software. As I understand it, in
addition to showing us some of the materials which they have on their
website, they would provide a tutorial on the development of course
materials, show us a General Chemistry course developed at the
University of Georgia and provide us with a trial on-line course or
conference consisting of papers and an opportunity for on-line
assynchronous discussion. This should provide an opportunity to
evaluate what they can make available.

WebCT will subscribe all CCCE members who wish to participate in
this trial workshop and trial session. ANY CCCE MEMBER NOT WISHING
TO PARTICIPATE SHOULD LET ME KNOW BY MID-SEPTEMBER.
