The CCCE seeks to publicize and promote the use of computers in
chemical education. Committee activities during 1997 and future plans
are summarized below.
(An asterisk (*) after a name is used to identify members of the
CCCE. Their affiliations are shown in Sextion XI.)
I. SYMPOSIA AND OTHER SESSIONS AT NATIONAL MEETINGS
Many members of the CCCE organize symposia at National and Regional
Meetings. Some symposia organized by Committee Members during 1997 or
1998 include:
"Chemical Education Using the Internet" - Brian Tissue* at October 1997
Southeast Regional ACS Meeting, Roanoke, VA.
"Integrating Computational Chemistry and Molecular Modeling into the
Undergraduate Curriculum" - Harry Pence* at the Spring 1998 ACS Meeting
in Dallas, TX
"Integrating Computers into the Undergraduate Curriculum" - Harry Pence*
at the August 1998 BCCE at the University of Waterloo
"Computers and Collaboration in Chemical Education" - George R. Long* at
the Fall 1998 ACS Meeting in Boston
"Using Symbolic Mathematics Software to Teach and Learn Chemistry" -
Theresa J. Zielinski* and Hal Harris (University of Missouri - St.
Louis) at the ACS Meeting in Boston.
Members of the Committee present papers at regional, national and
international meetings publicizing the use of computers in chemical
education.
II. COMPUTERS IN CHEMICAL EDUCATION NEWSLETTER
The Newsletter is published in the Spring and Fall. The Spring
1998 issue will be distributed to everyone attending the 15th Biennial
Conference on Chemical Education at Clemson University. Brian J.
Pankuch* is editor of the Newsletter.
III. ON-LINE COMPUTER CONFERENCES
The Committee has organized on-line conferences since the summer of
1993. An On-Line Conference featuring eleven papers in chemistry and
chemical education was held during the summer of 1997.
Another conference with twelve papers and over 800 participants
from forty-nine different countries (629 from the U.S.) is being held
between January 16 and May 15, 1998.
Future conferences are presently being planned. Hugh Cartwright
(Oxford University) is organizing a session for September and October
1998 entitled "Switching Students on to Science". Paul Kelter
(University of Nebraska) will organize a session entitled "What Should
Students Know When They Leave GeneraL Chemistry?" for September and
October of 1999. Scott Van Bramer (Widener University) is organizing a
session "Teaching Spectroscopy" for November and December of 1999.
Donald Rosenthal* is organizing a general session for the summer of
1999. Other sessions are in the early planning stages.
Thomas O'Haver* originally suggested organizing these on-line
conferences. He handled the World Wide Web and Listserv for all the
conferences.
IV. ON-LINE COURSES
The Committee helped organize an on-line course entitled
"Environmental and Industrial Chemistry" during the spring 1996
semester. About one hundred upperclass chemistry students from twenty
colleges and universities participated.
and http://www.clarkson.edu/~rosen2/olcc.html).
Another course with the same title but different course content is
being held presently. An Organizing Committee helped plan the course.
The six members of the Organizing Committee are Leonard Archer - Course
Chair and WebBoard Manager (Missouri Western State College), James
Beard* - Publicity and Registration, Sylvia Esjornson - Content
Coordinator (Southwestern Oklahoma State University), George R. Long* -
Technical Advisor and Website Manager, Lindy Harrison - Faculty
Coordinator (York College of Pennsylvania), and Donald Rosenthal* -
Listserv Manager. Approximately 130 students from fifteen different
schools are enrolled in the course and over sixty course instructors and
observers monitor the course.

An on-line course entitled "Pharmaceuticals, Their Discovery,
Regulation and Manufacture (OLCC3)" is being organized for sometime
during the 1998-1999 school year by a committee chaired by Aline
Harrison (York College of Pennsylvania).
V. NATIONAL COMPUTER WORKSHOPS
Four CCCE National Computer Workshops involving 65 participants
were held at the 14th BCCE at Clemson University during the summer of
1996. Four workshops are planned for the BCCE at the University of
Waterloo:
A. Instructional Software for General and Organic Chemistry
What's Out There and How Are People Using It?
Marco Molinaro*
B. Using the World Wide Web in Chemistry Courses
Brian Tissue*
C. Developing Multimedia Materials for Chemistry Instruction
Charles Abrams*
D. Prediction of Physical and Chemical Properties by Computational
Chemistry
Paul M. Lahti (University of Massachusetts, Amherst)
VI. COMMITTEE MEETINGS
For a number of years the Committee has held an open-to-the-public
meeting as well as a closed meeting at the biennial BCCE meetings.
Meetings were held at the 14th BCCE at Clemson and will be held at the
15th BCCE at the University of Waterloo. The open meetings provide an
opportunity for the Committee to exchange ideas with other chemistry
educators and to obtain new ideas and participants.
VII. CCCENET
Not everyone attends BCCE Committee Meetings. CCCENET was
established in September 1991 to provide better communication between
Committee members, all of whom have access to CCCENET. Messages sent to
the Network are distributed to all Committee members.
VIII. DIVISION OF CHEMICAL EDUCATION WORLD WIDE WEB SITE
A sub-committee consisting of Nancy S. Gettys*, Carolyn Sweeney
Judd*, Brian Tissue* (chair) and Theresa J. Zielinski* is continuing to
help organize and maintain a Division of Chemical Education World Wide
Web Site (http://divched.chem.wisc.edu/divched/).
IX. PUBLICATIONS
During and after the 1993 on-line Conference on-line discussion of
"What Chemists Need to Know About Computing" occurred. Theresa J.
Zielinski* and Mary L. Swift (Howard University) subsequently organized
a symposium with this title at the 1994 Fall ACS Meeting. Partly as a
result of these activities, they have just published a book "Using
Computers in Chemistry and Chemical Education" (ISBN 0-8412-3465-5 385
pages - 1997 - American Chemical Society, Washington, DC).
Theresa Zielinski and Mary L. Swift published an on-line paper -
"What Every Chemist Should Know About Computers, II" (The Chemical
Educator, Volume 2, Number 3, 1997.
An article and materials about the 1996 intercollegiate on-line
course "Environmental and Industrial Chemistry" will appear in the April
1998 issue of the Chemical Educator.
X. CCCE CHAIR
The term of Donald Rosenthal as Chair of the Committee expired at
the end of 1997. Alfred Lata* agreed to help in the search for a new
Committee Chair. The CCCE recommended Harry Pence* be appointed Chair.
