The CCCE seeks to encourage, publicize and support the development, implementation and assessment of computing technologies in chemical education.
Committee activities are described in this report (http://www.ched-ccce.org/ccce/reports/report00.html). CCCE Committee Member names are followed by an asterisk in items I through VIII.
Three CCCE members are currently members of the Division of Chemical Education's Program Committee (Catherine Middlecamp*, Harry Pence* and Paul Kelter*).
Members of the CCCE organize symposia and present papers at National ACS Meetings.
Harry Pence* and Kristen Kulinowski organized a CCCE sponsored symposium:
"What's the Next Big Step for Using Computers to Teach Chemistry?" at the National ACS Meeting in Washington, DC on August 23 - 24, 2000.
Since 1978 the CCCE has published and distributed a Newsletter in printed form. The Newsletter was distributed to everyone attending the 2000 BCCE at the University of Michigan. Beginning with the Fall 2000 issue the Newsletter is available only on the World Wide Web (http://www.ched-ccce.org/newsletter/).
Brian Pankuch* is Editor of the Newsletter.
On-line Computer Conferences have been sponsored by the CCCE since the summer of 1993. A total of fifteen conferences have been organized to-date. The archives of all these conferences are available on the CCCE website (http://www.ched-ccce.org/confchem/).
There are usually between 500 and 700 registrants for each conference.
Three conferences were held in 2000. "The Role and Nature of Research by Undergraduates in Chemistry" (April 3 to May 5, 2000) was organized by Tim Champion and Willis Weigand. "The Use of Computer Simulations in General Chemistry" (May 12 to June 6, 2000) was organized by Denis Busieres. "Assessment of Model Creation and Use by Chemistry Sudents" (October 6 to November 3, 2000) was organized by John Oversby.
Eight future conferences are presently being planned. (See the schedule for additional details.)
Brian Tissue* manages the CONFCHEM website and Donald Rosenthal* manages the CONFCHEM Majordomo Discussion list.
Four on-line intercollegiate chemistry courses have been organized to date. The last course "Environmental and Industrial Chemistry" was offered during spring 2000. A Committee consisting of Sylvia Esjornson, Leonard J. Archer and others organized the course. Additional information about the four courses is available on the CCCE website (http://www.ched-ccce.org/olcc/).
A CCCE sub-committee has been formed to consider future on-line courses. The committee consists of James Beard* (chair), Sylvia Esjornson, George Long*, Donald Rosenthal*, Scott Van Bramer* and Theresa Zielinski.
Over a dozen CCCE National Computer Workshops have been offered since the 1960s. In recent years Workshops have been held at the Clemson University (1996) and University of Waterloo (1998) Biennial Conferences on Chemical Education. The possibility of offering workshops at the 2002 and 2004 BCCE meetings is presently being explored. Charles Abrams* and Donald Rosenthal* are jointly chairing the organizing committee.
Open and closed meetings of the CCCE have been scheduled at BCCE meetings. The open meetings provide an opportunity for the CCCE to interact with those attending the BCCE meetings and to receive suggestions and inform chemical educators of present and future plans. Open and closed meetings were held at the 2000 BCCE Meeting at the University of Michigan.
In 1991 the CCCE established CCCENET, a private discussion list, which can be used at anytime to discuss committee matters. All CCCE members are subscribed to CCCENET. A message sent to CCCENET is distributed to all CCCE members.
In 1996, John Moore, then Chair of the Division of Chemical Education, requested that the CCCE assist the Division in establishing a Division of Chemical Education Web Site (http://divched.chem.wisc.edu/divched/).
The sub-committee consisted of Brian M. Tissue*, Nancy S. Gettys, Carolyn Sweeney Judd and Theresa Zielinski*. (All were members of the CCCE in 1996). The CCCE continued to help organize and maintain the site until June 2000 when the Division appointed Craig Bowen to maintain the site.
In 2000 there were 22 members of the CCCE. The names, affiliations and e-mail addresses are provided below. Additional information about the Committee Members who are members of the CCCE in 2001 may be found under CCCE Current Members on the website.
