2001 ANNUAL REPORT
THE COMMITTEE ON COMPUTERS IN CHEMICAL EDUCATION (CCCE)
The CCCE seeks to encourage, publicize and support the
development, implementation and assessment of computing
technologies in chemical education.
2001 activities in support of these objectives are summarized in
this report.
I. CONFCHEM - ON-LINE COMPUTER CONFERENCES
Three conferences were held in 2001:
"Lecture Demonstrations in Chemistry on the World Wide Web"
organized and chaired by Oliver Seely and George Wiger during
Spring 2001.
"Environmental and Risk/Benefit Issues in the K-12 Science
Classroom" organized and chaired by Elizabeth Kleppinger
during Summer 2001.
"On-Line Teaching Methods" organized and chaired by John Penn
during Fall 2001.
The archives of these (and previous) conference papers are
available on the CCCE website
(http://www.ched-ccce.org/confchem/).
Discussion of the papers in each conference is held using the
CONFCHEM Majordomo Discussion List. The discussions are
archived
(http://majordomo.clarkson.edu/archives/index.cgi/confchem/).
Between 500 and 700 registrants participated in each of the
2001 conferences.
A paper describing the CONFCHEM on-line conferences and other
such conferences was published (Brian M. Tissue*, Scott E. Van
Bramer* and Donald Rosenthal*, J. Chem. Inf. Comput. Sci.,
2002, 42, 23-25).
Brian Tissue* manages the CONFCHEM website and Donald
Rosenthal* manages the CONFCHEM Majordomo Discussion list.
II. COMPUTERS IN CHEMICAL EDUCATION NEWSLETTER
Spring and Fall issues were published in 2001. These issues
are available only on the World Wide Web
(http://www.ched-ccce.org/newsletter/). Articles in these
issues were discussed using the CONFCHEM Discussion List and
are archived
(http://majordomo.clarkson.edu/archives/index.cgi/confchem/).
Brian Pankuch* is Editor of the Newsletter.
Scott Van Bramer* chairs the on-line discussion of the papers.
III. SYMPOSIA AND OTHER SESSIONS AT NATIONAL MEETINGS
Four CCCE members are currently members of the Division of
Chemical Education's Program Committee (Paul Kelter*,
Catherine Middlecamp*, Harry Pence* and Gabriela Weaver*).
The CCCE and its members organize symposia at National ACS
Meetings. Also, CCCE members present papers at these
meetings.
Harry Pence* and Joyce Whitehead organized a CCCE symposium at
the Fall 2001 Chicago ACS meeting on "Using Computers to Teach
Biochemistry".
IV. ON-LINE INTERCOLLEGIATE COURSES
A CCCE sub-committee was formed to consider future on-line
courses. The committee consists of James Beard* (chair),
Sylvia Esjornson, George Long*, Donald Rosenthal*, Scott Van
Bramer* and Theresa Zielinski*.
(Information about past courses is available on the CCCE
website (http://www.ched-ccce.org/olcc/).)
V. NATIONAL COMPUTER WORKSHOPS
The possibility of offering workshops at the 2004 BCCE
meetings is presently being explored. Charles Abrams* and
Donald Rosenthal* are jointly chairing the organizing
committee.
VI. COMMITTEE MEETINGS
No formal Committee Meetings were held in 2001. CCCENET has
been used to discuss matters of interest to the CCCE (see
VII).
Open and closed meetings of the CCCE are planned for the 2002
BCCE Meeting at Western Washington University.
VII. CCCENET - COMMITTEE DISCUSSION LIST
The private discussion list CCCENET established in 1991 may be
used at anytime to discuss committee matters. All CCCE
members are subscribed to CCCENET. A message sent to CCCENET
is distributed to all CCCE members.
VIII. CCCE WEBSITE - http://www.ched-ccce.org/
This website is used to provide information about past,
present and future CCCE activities.
The website is maintained by Brian Tissue*.
IX. COMMITTEE MEMBERSHIP 2001
In 2001 there were 23 members of the CCCE. The names,
affiliations and e-mail addresses are provided below.
Additional information about the Committee Members who are
members of the CCCE in 2002 may be found under CCCE Current
Members on the website.
In previous sections of this report committee members have
