development, implementation and assessment of computing
technologies in chemical education.

This report summarizes some C.C.C.E. activities in
pursuit of these objectives.

I. CONFCHEM - ON-LINE COMPUTER CONFERENCES
Three conferences were held in 2002:
   "Undergraduate Research" - organized by
George Long* and Pam Mabrouk held
     during Spring 2002
"Problem Solving in Chemistry" - organized by
Doug Cameron and Peter Lykos held
     in June 2002
"Teaching Safety in High Schools, Colleges and
Universities" - organized by George Wahl, Jr.
     held in Fall 2002
Some CCCE Members presented papers at these
conferences. The CONFCHEM website is managed by
Brian Tissue*. The CONFCHEM Majordomo Discussion
List is managed by Donald Rosenthal*.

II. COMPUTERS IN CHEMICAL EDUCATION NEWSLETTER
Spring and Fall issues were published in 2002.
These issues are available on the World Wide Web
   (http://www.ched-ccce.org/newsletter/).
Articles in these issues were discussed using the
CONFCHEM Discussion List and are archived.
Brian Pankuch is editor of the Newsletter.
Scott Van Bramer chairs the on-line discussion of
   the papers.

III. SYMPOSIA AND OTHER SESSIONS AT NATIONAL MEETINGS
Five CCCE members are currently members of the Division of
Chemical Education's Program Committee (Renee Cole*, Paul
Kelter*, Catherine Middlecamp*, Harry Pence* and
   Gabriela Weaver*).
The CCCE and its members organize symposia at National ACS
Meetings and present papers at these meetings.
A symposium entitled "What's the Next Big Step in the Use
of Computers to Teach Chemistry?" was organized by
Harry Pence and Tracy Schoolcraft at the Spring 2002
   ACS meeting in Orlando, FL.
A symposium entitled "Using Computer-Based Technologies
to Effect Student Learning" was organized by James Reeves*
and Michael Sanger* at the Fall 2002 ACS meeting in Boston.
The CCCE organized a symposium at the 2002 BCCE Meeting
"Computers in Chemical Education: Selected Topics"
at Western Washington University. Papers were presented
   by CCCE members and others.

IV. ON-LINE INTERCOLLEGIATE COURSES
A CCCE sub-committee was formed to consider future on-line
courses. The committee consists of James Beard(chair)*,
Sylvia Esjornson, George Long*, Donald Rosenthal*, Scott Van
Bramer* and Theresa Zielinski*. James Beard* has agreed to
help organize a future on-line course on "Environmental and
   Industrial Chemistry".
An On-Line Intercollegiate Course entitled "Chemical Safety:
Protecting Ourselves and Our Environment" is planned for
the Fall of 2004. Information about proposed and past courses
is available on the CCCE website
   (http://www.ched-ccce.org/olcc/).

V. COMMITTEE MEETINGS
Open and closed meetings of the CCCE were held at the
2002 BCCE Meeting at Western Washington University.
Meetings are planned for the 2004 BCCE Meeting at
   Iowa State University.

VI. CCCENET - COMMITTEE DISCUSSION LIST
The private discussion list CCCENET established in 1991 may be
used at any time to discuss committee matters. All CCCE
members are subscribed to CCCENET. A message sent to CCCENET
is distributed to all CCCE members.
