ACS DIVISION OF CHEMICAL EDUCATION
COMMITTEE ON COMPUTERS IN CHEMICAL EDUCATION (CCCE)
ANNUAL REPORT - JULY 30, 2004
The CCCE seeks to encourage, publicize and support the development,
assessment and use of computing technologies in chemical education.
This report summarizes some CCCE activities in pursuit of these
objectives.
I. CONFCHEM - ON-LINE COMPUTER CONFERENCES
The conferences provide an opportunity for authors to present
substantial papers on the CONFCHEM website -
http://www.ched-ccce.org/confchem/. Papers may include
multimedia materials. Generally, papers are discussed in the
following manner: - A day is devoted to short questions from
participants or authors. - Several days are then set aside for the
discussion of each paper using the CONFCHEM Discussion List which
has over 600 registrants.
Presentation of a paper does not preclude its subsequent
publication elsewhere.
CONFCHEM Conferences have been co-sponsored with other Divisions
of the American Chemical Society and other Committees of the
Division of Chemical Education. We hope to promote such joint
endeavors in the future.
Conferences held in 2003 and 2004:
March 28 - May 6, 2003
"Non-Traditional Teaching Methods:
Methods Other Than Lecture and Assessment of these Methods"
Organized by George M. Shalhoub and Gabriela C. Weaver*
http://www.ched-ccce.org/confchem/2003/a/
January 12 - February 10, 2004
"How and Why Should We Teach Chemistry for Non-Science Majors?"
Organized by Paul Kelter* and Renee Cole*
http://www.ched-ccce.org/confchem/2004/a/
Future Conferences are scheduled:
September 17 to October, 2004
"Teaching Computing in Chemistry Courses"
Organized by Carl H. Snyder* and Donald Rosenthal*
http://www.ched-ccce.org/confchem/2004/b/
January 14 - February, 2005
"Trends and New Ideas in Chemical Education"
Organized by Brian Tissue* and Donald Rosenthal*
http://www.ched-ccce.org/confchem/2005/a/
July - August, 2005
"Technology in High School Chemistry" Organized by M. Gwen Sibert,
Mark T. Duncan, Michael St. Pierre and John Mauch
http://www.ched-ccce.org/confchem/2005/b/
January - February, 2006
"Chemistry Discovery Programs: Undergraduate, Graduate, Post-Grad"
Organized by Brian Tissue*
http://www.ched-ccce.org/confchem/2006/a/
Additional CONFCHEM Conferences are in early planning stages.
Archives of the 23 past CONFCHEM Conferences are available:
http://www.ched-ccce.org/confchem/past.html
The CONFCHEM website is managed by Brian Tissue*. The CONFCHEM
Majordomo Discussion List is managed by Donald Rosenthal*.
For more information see: http://www.ched-ccce.org/confchem/
II. COMPUTERS IN CHEMICAL EDUCATION NEWSLETTER
Spring and Fall issues of "Computers in Chemical Education
Newsletter" were published in 2003. These issues are available on
the World Wide Web
(http://www.ched-ccce.org/newsletter/).
Articles in these issues were discussed using the CONFCHEM
Discussion List and are archived.
A Fall 2004 issue of the Newsletter will be available in October,
2004.
Brian Pankuch* is editor of the Newsletter.
Scott Van Bramer* chairs the on-line discussion of papers.
III. SYMPOSIA AND OTHER SESSIONS AT NATIONAL MEETINGS
Four CCCE members are currently members of the Division of
Chemical Education's Program Committee (Renee Cole*, Paul Kelter*,
Catherine Middlecamp* and Harry Pence*)
The CCCE and its members organize symposia at National ACS
Meetings and present papers.
A symposium sponsored by CCCE entitled "What is the Next Big Step
in the Use of Computers to Teach Chemistry" was organized by Harry
Pence* and Laura Anna at the Spring 2004 ACS meeting in Anaheim,
CA.
IV. ON-LINE INTERCOLLEGIATE COURSES
During Fall 2002 a CONFCHEM Conference "Teaching Safety in High
Schools, Colleges and Universities" was organized by George Wahl,
Jr. http://www.ched-ccce.org/confchem/2002/c/.
As a result of discussion at the end of the conference, it was
decided to organize an online intercollegiate course entitled:
CHEMICAL SAFETY: PROTECTING OURSELVES AND OUR ENVIRONMENT.
The course is jointly sponsored by the Division of Chemical Health
and Safety and the Division of Chemical Education.
Gary Trammell chaired the Organizing Committee and played a key
role in structuring the course. The course website may be found
at http://science.widener.edu/svb/olcc_safety/index.html. There are
student and faculty online discussion lists. The course will be
offered during the Fall 2004 term. About a dozen schools will
participate (see the course website for additional details).
The CCCE offered four previous on-line intercollegiate courses
http://www.ched-ccce.org/olcc/.
V. COMMITTEE MEETINGS
Open and closed meetings of the CCCE are held at BCCE Meetings.
Meetings were held at the 2004 BCCE Meeting at Iowa State
University.
VI. CCCENET - COMMITTEE DISCUSSION LIST
The private discussion list CCCENET established in 1991 may be
used at any time to discuss committee matters. All CCCE members
are subscribed to CCCENET. A message sent to CCCENET is
distributed to all CCCE members.
VII. CCCE WEBSITE - http://www.ched-ccce.org/index.html
This website is used to provide information about past, present
and future CCCE activities. The website is maintained by Brian
Tissue*.
VIII. OTHER ACTIVITIES
The CCCE assisted the International Center for First-year
Undergraduate Chemistry Education (ICUC) in establishing a private
(restricted) discussion list and will help with the establishment
of a public ICUC-L Discussion List. See
http://icuc.chem.uiuc.edu/icucwebsite/index.html
for more information about ICUC.
In the past CCCE has organized over a dozen CCCE National Computer
Workshops. The last workshops were organized at the BCCE meeting
at the University of Waterloo.
IX. CCCE MEMBERS 2004
There are presently 20 CCCE Committee Members. Names,
affiliations and e-mail addresses are provided below.
